exit

process.exit(code=0)

Ends the process with the specified code. If omitted, exit returns with a code of 0.

if(process.argv.length == 2) {
  console.error("Please provide arguments.");
  process.exit(1);
}
$ node doc_test.js
Please provide arguments.
$ echo $?
1

It is important to note that negative exit codes produce exit code 255:

if(process.argv.length == 2) {
  console.error("Please provide arguments.");
  process.exit(-1);
}
$ node doc_test.js
Please provide arguments.
$ echo $?
255
